Overview

The Terrorists objective is to plant the bomb or to eliminate all of the Counter-Terrorists. The Counter-Terrorists objective is to eliminate all of the Terrorists before the bomb is planted or to defuse the bomb after it is planted. Like in its successor, de_dust2, de_dust is set in a Middle Eastern town and features two bombsites.

Development

De_dust was originally designed and created by Dave Johnston. His inspiration for the map came from still shots of a desert map from Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms. With the help of Jess Cliffe and MacMan, Johnston was able to recreate the textures. The map was originally called cs_destiny (and featured a hostage rescue mission), but after multiple
elements of the map were changed (upgraded textures, new areas, and added cover), the map was changed to include two bombsites and named de_dust.

In Condition Zero footpaths were added to help clarify where enemies had previously walked. Sound files for walking over the tiles were also added. Kristen Perry provided further concept art for the Counter-Strike: Source upgrades, which included new textures, changes in brightness, and the addition of aesthetic objects, like the palm trees. In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the color of the walls, floor, and concrete were changed. New props were added, such as the sand particle effect. The underpass of the bridge had
been widened and the addition of a stairwell underneath the side allows the Terrorist team another access point. A wooden boardwalk was also added for easier access to bombsite B.
